The Brief
Max's garden had an old shed at the back that had long since run its course, sitting against the boundary with a tired fence behind it. The brief was simple in principle and involved in practice: replace both — the shed and the fence — with a proper two-person garden office that used the boundary line as the rear wall of the building, maximising every centimetre of available space.
This garden office in East Molesey solved two problems at once. The old shed came down. The tired back fence came out. And in their place went a properly specified, full-size garden office for two people — using the boundary line as the back wall of the building, so not a centimetre of garden is wasted.
Charred spruce cladding covers the exterior — Shou Sugi Ban-treated timber with a deep black finish and a distinctive surface texture. It needs no painting, no staining, and no oiling. The treatment that creates the colour also dramatically increases the timber's resistance to weather, insects and UV. It will look the same in ten years. The front elevation features a 2.5m-wide full-height window — designed from the start with the desk position in mind. Max and his colleague sit facing the garden, with the view framed at desk height. It's a better place to spend eight hours than most offices in a building. Inside: plastered walls, engineered flooring, two full workstation electrical specs with double sockets, data points, and a hard-wired WiFi access point. The before-and-after here tells the story more clearly than the description: cluttered old shed, rotting fence — replaced by a building that improves the garden it sits in.
