The Brief
Dan and Tamsin needed a proper home office for two professionals who need to actually concentrate. Two things had to be right from the start: the position in the garden to get the best natural light through the working day, and the glazing specification to keep external noise where it belongs — outside. The brief also had to solve a dead corner of the garden that had been neither used nor enjoyed for years.
This garden office in Thorpe was designed around how its owners actually work. Positioned deliberately for daylight, specified with triple glazing for acoustic attenuation, wired for serious internet — and built in a corner of the garden that had previously been wasted space. It's now the room Dan and Tamsin spend most of their day in.
Triple glazing is a meaningful upgrade on standard A-rated double glazing when sound isolation matters. Combined with the inherent acoustic performance of SIPs construction — which by nature creates a well-sealed, thermally massive envelope — the result is a room that feels noticeably quieter than its surroundings. We oriented the building deliberately so the main glazing faces into the best available light, reducing glare at the monitor-facing angles and keeping the room bright through the afternoon. Inside: plastered interior, fitted flooring, full electrical fit-out with double sockets and data cabling at desk height, and a hard-wired WiFi access point installed in the ceiling. Not a Wi-Fi extender. A proper access point on its own dedicated data run — because video calls drop at the worst moments, and this avoids all of that.
